DirectX 11.

Heard rumours about this, but now every body is talking about this new and inovating  way to create real life effects. Here is what i’ve found about this new direct x.

According to a confidential source, Microsoft has decided to switch to ray-tracing in DirectX 11. They also plan to have DirectX 11 ready in time to debut with Windows Vista Service Pack 2. To do that, they have also decided to base it on the x86 architecture and Intel’s ray-tracing engine. There are rumours that Intel did more than just “suggest” it to Microsoft, but that’s another story altogether.

As DirectX 11 is a work in progress, Microsoft does not have an exact timeline. But the source claims that DirectX 11 could be part of Windows Vista by late 2008. Development is expected to be very short as much of the work had already been done by Intel. Coincidence?

You need not worry about your old raster-based DirectX 10 or older games or graphics cards. DirectX 11 will continue to support rasterization. It just includes support for ray-tracing as well. There will be two DirectX 11 modes, based on support by the application and the hardware (see table on the right).

Assassin’s Creed – The trilogy.

Lately I kept hearing rummours about a trilogy being planned for Assassin’s creed, I love the plan, another assassin’s creed would be really nice right about now :D. The next Assassins’s creed will probably about a ninja in Japan in medevil time, and the third one should be about an assassin in Central America.

Ubisoft didn’t officially stated anything about the trilogy but I hope they will start the development as soon as possible.

XP, upgrade from Vista?

Gamespot  did a couple of test to see the efficiency of the new Vista service pack 1 released a couple of days ago. Here are some stuff they found out.

The release of Service Pack 1 might be good time to revisit the debate of whether or not to get Windows Vista. Over the past year Microsoft’s been busy patching away at the operating system, and it just might be ready for the discerning gamer. Service packs are basically gigantic patch files for operating systems that contain hundreds of minor and major fixes. Most of what’s in Service Pack 1 is already available via Windows Update, but Microsoft added a few fixes to the operating system that hadn’t yet been released for widespread consumption. For the most part, service packs do a lot to increase stability, compatibility, and security while at the same time bundling hundreds of fixes all up into one nice file or check box for the user to click. Vista’s built-in Windows Update utility is the easiest, and likely the fastest, way to get the new service pack. The system will automatically download only what it needs to complete the installation. Depending on how long it’s been since you’ve updated your computer, the length of the download and installation process can vary. You’re probably better off downloading the stand-alone file and installing it yourself if you’re starting with a fresh Windows Vista installation. Don’t be surprised if your computer takes more than an hour to install the service pack.

According to Microsoft, computers with Service Pack 1 should experience numerous performance benefits. Many of the enhancements relate to networking and file-transfer speeds. Service Pack 1 will reduce the time it takes to get out of hibernation and standby modes, and will improve battery life for some laptops. Service Pack 1 will bring no new gaming performance enhancements, but Microsoft states that gaming performance should move upward slightly.

We compared Windows Vista SP1 to an unpatched installation of Windows Vista and to Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 2 installed. The operating systems were tested with a variety of video cards to get a better picture of how gaming performance varied. We used single-card systems from Nvidia and ATI, and we included an SLI setup from Nvidia and a dual-GPU graphics card from ATI to see how some of the more exotic flavors fared.

System Setup: Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9775, Intel D5400XS, 4GB FB-DIMM (2x2GB), 750GB Seagate 7200.10 SATA Hard Disk Drive, Windows XP SP2, Windows Vista 32-bit, Windows Vista 32-bit SP1. Graphics Cards: GeForce 8800 GTX 768MB. Graphics Drivers: Nvidia ForceWare beta 174.53. The single-GPU GeForce 8800 GTX experienced gains in games like Call of Duty 4 and Oblivion when we compared Windows Vista to Windows Vista with Service Pack 1 installed. Performance stayed mostly flat in other games. Pairing up two 8800 GTXs for an SLI setup yielded similar results. When we compare Windows Vista with Service Pack 1 to Windows XP SP2, the GeForce 8800 GTX kept up in Call of Duty 4 and BioShock. Vista with SP1 actually took the lead in Oblivion, but it’s hard to ignore XP’s victories in Crysis and Team Fortress 2. SLI performance was decidedly better under Windows XP than Windows Vista with and without SP1 in almost all of the tests.

Conclusion

Windows Vista with Service Pack 1 is a step in the right direction. Gaming performance increased in comparison to a fresh installation of Windows Vista. Windows XP SP2 provides better overall performance, and remains the place to go for dual-GPU solutions. Windows Vista is not quite the ideal gaming platform yet, but the new OS is getting close to dethroning Windows XP.

SP1 wasn’t really designed as a gaming pack – it adresses the issues people had with vista in general such as file extraction taking 10+ minutes for 1 MB files. In terms of operating systems vista is by far the most stable one yet, I’ve not had a single crash or freeze since I installed it. So even if XP is faster, I’m not interested in changeing back right now or ever.

Crayon Physics Deluxe

The guys at KloonieGames created an awesome game which involves an intelligent physics engine. I’m sure they putted alot of time in the development of this game and they should get the appreciation that they deserve.This game is awesome for kids, but it’s sure is a lot of fun even for grownups. The music is so relaxing

Hudson’s eye for detail and love for the genre has made him a leader in western console RPG design. His work on BioWare’s biggest projects has allowed the company to successfully marry the complexity of the computer RPG with simpler, more intuitive interface of the console. The results show in the astonishingly well-realized worlds of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and Mass Effect, and the sales of these games show that gamers are more than willing to wrap themselves in Hudson’s deep stories.

8. Yoshiaki Koizumi

Koizumi is not Nintendo’s most famous face. Rather, he is the man behind the man behind Nintendo’s mascot Mario; but with Shigeru Miyamoto devoting his time to so many projects, Koizumi is the one who gets to go in elbows-deep with the Mario games. Last year, he led his Nintendo EAD team to the release of Super Mario Galaxy, a game which many (including ourselves at Next Generation) proclaimed the best game of the year.

The master of Metal Gear Solid is content to make us wait for as long as it takes to make Guns of the Patriots a masterpiece. But what he has released of the game over the last year—both in terms of video footage and played demonstrations—show that his last Metal Gear could very well be the killer app the PlayStation 3 needs. If it is, it will be the third time Kojima has turned his tactical espionage action series into a Sony system mover, and a fitting end to his tenure on the franchise.

The annals of Wright’s legendary career have been well documented throughout the years, and the success of The Sims certainly does not need to be recapped here. What does need to be mentioned is why the man continues to find himself near the top of this list despite not releasing a commercial product in some time. But even that is rather obvious; the upcoming Spore is so ambitious, so exciting and has so much potential to change so much about the medium that as long as the project continues Wright can expect all of us to eagerly wait for it. Besides, the lack of a release date after years of development show he’s one of the only men in the world that EA is willing to wait for. That in and of itself says a lot.

LoPiccolo and the rest of the team at Harmonix put together a great game last year in Rock Band. But they also put together a new platform in Rock Band, an entertainment service with new music constantly being released to grow the game’s accessibility and user base. The company also released a paradigm shift in Rock Band, the $170 game that nevertheless sold out across stores nationwide. That’s a lot of things for one product to do, but LoPiccolo and the rest of the guys and gals at Harmonix seem pretty adept at astonishing.

Call of Duty is a property that is heavily relied upon by the industry’s biggest publisher; that property in turn will continue to heavily rely on West.

2007 was a banner year for Bungie. Halo 3 was released, and found an unsurprising but still incredible reception waiting for it. Then Bungie declared that it was independent once again, and would be working on building exciting new properties that had little to do with Master Chief. Ryan headed the studio throughout this dramatic moment in Bungie’s history. Now Bungie is probably gaming’s most coveted free agent, its roads open and possibilities endless. Ryan continues to lead the studio.

1. Ken Levine

Yes, 2007 was a year of staggering achievement and many excellent games. But even in such illustrious company the branchild of Ken Levine, BioShock, managed to stand out. Levine’s Rapture was a setting unlike anything ever created, and even as millions played it for its inventive shooting mechanics it spoke complex ideas to all who cared to listen. Theories on philosophy and dogma were in there, as were statements on the nature of choice and the medium of games itself. Fallout 3.

Too bad that the game will not be released until the third quarter of 2008, but it’s worth the wait :).
