How to host a Call of duty game.

People seem to ask this question allot lately so I decided to help them.

In order to get your server going you need to make a config. For your convenience here is one setup up for you: Dedicated.CFG

Download that cfg (right click save as) and open it with notepad or wordpad and then just change the server name along with rcon and save. Once you’ve done that place the dedicated.cfg file in your call of duty 4 main folder.

Default is C:\Program Files\Activision\Call of Duty 4 – Modern Warfare\main.

Now that you have your cfg edited and placed in the right directory you need to make another shortcut for iw3mp.exe on your desktop and rename it to dedicated server or whatever you want really. This is so that you have two shortcuts to the ‘iw3mp.exe’, one for playing cod4 normally online and the other for your dedicated cod4 server. So now with your shortcut for your server you have to right click it and click properties.

Where it says “Target” you have to place this line: +set dedicated 2 +set sv_punkbuster 1 +exec dedicated.cfg +map_rotate after iw3mp.exe so it should look something like this:

“C:\Program Files\Activision\Call of Duty 4 – Modern Warfare\iw3mp.exe” +set dedicated 2 +set sv_punkbuster 1 +exec dedicated.cfg +map_rotate

Then click apply. Note, that if it doesn’t let you apply and gives you an error then you’re doing something wrong.

If you’ve done all that, you can simply click on your server shortcut and a cod4 console window will open. This is totally normal and means that your game is running in dedicated server mode.

hi i have done all the things above and my server name still don’t show up, we share and internet connection throught a router(D LINK DIR-301) i know i need to forward my porst but don’t have a clue how to do that can anyone help me please>?

  11. Rapier Says:

hay … too al of you who cant find the server.
it is because this person is an idiot.

the most important part about creating the server is being able to forward the ports!!!

    specifically ports:
    20800
    20810
    28960

this can be done by your local router.
if you have a linksys type in
192.162.1.1 into your browser and go from there!

if you are having more trouble go to this site.

hey, well ive already got probelms.. it wont allow me to download the file… it says theres an error?

  13. LOL Says:

first of all, don’t call people an idiot of you can not even type correctly yourself. Secondly, the link you posted throws back a 404 “Error 404
Not Found, Sorry, but you are looking for something that isn’t here.”
    SO CHECK YOUR SHIT.
for everyone else who cannot see that the author is not posting feedback for FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) try searching for what the problem is on google.com. “server not showing up on list cod4″ or “server config for cod4″ or anything like that. This post was done for the sole purpose of generally showing you how to set up a dedicated server!
